I'm sure I've said that already...

I've definitely said THIS before, but in treatment no one ever told me why I should get to a truly healthy weight for my age, gender, ethnicity and general body shape. They told me I should gain weight, which I understood to be because I was underweight enough to be in medical danger, but they never even suggested that I aim for a BMI of 20+ (I eventually came up with this idea by myself), that 18.5 wouldn't be adequate or that there was any rationale behind all of this other than "they said so". It was truly a shock to me later on when I discovered that what I saw as doing myself a favour - keeping myself a bit underweight to appease the ED thoughts - was actually keeping me sick, and that I wouldn't have a hope in hell of recovering fully unless I gained to what should be my real adult weight. I don't think for a second that any of that would have made an impact on me or my illness when I was very unwell and my brain was riddled with ED, but later on, when I was more stable and able to think straight, I might have listened and avoided the worst of my relapses. Now this is the cornerstone of my recovery - keeping my weight high enough, making sure I don't lose during periods of stress or illness.

The whole culture of ED treatment needs to change...

(By the way, my recap of Dr. Insel's talk and the after-symposium party is up on my blog now if you want to read!)Katiehttp://giantfossilizedarmadillo.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011660132120465673.post-1502612405483438822011-11-15T10:17:55.318+00:002011-11-15T10:17:55.318+00:00I have watched 'State not Weight' previous...I have watched 'State not Weight' previously and found it extremely useful in helping me understand what I was really aiming for wrt recovery.
